peter parker : spider-man
H I S T O R Y
The Origins of …

He is the Amazing Spider-Man, but before he ever became the web slinging hero of (sometimes) ill repute he was little more than a timid and humble kid from Queens. An only child, orphaned as an infant and raised by his only remaining blood relatives; Ben and May Parker. The household provided nothing short of an extremely loving environment and a sufficient income to encourage the boy’s budding interest in science and chemistry, as well as his affinity for photography. His love for the academic clearly made him an outcast in his school, turning the socially inept and scrawny young man into the perfect target for jocks and bullies; one of which was named Flash Thompson. Up until that point, life didn’t seem to have anything very spectacular in store for the meek teenager.

Fate changed its tune the day our studious little nerd attended a science exhibit. Destiny assured all the pieces were in place to transform the everyday, average kid into someone amazing by way of a spider bite, an irradiated spider of course. His speed, reflexes, agility, and strength were all augmented. He could do things he’d never even dreamed he’d be capable of, including wall crawling and a precognitive sense of danger he aptly dubbed ‘Spidey-Sense’. Things would never be the same from that day on, and Peter couldn’t have been happier about it.

Every nerds dream!

Armed with a vast arsenal of super-human (or was Spider more appropriate?) powers, Peter sought what any boy who was ordinary, and had never been anything but would. He sought to be extraordinary. Fame, fortune, and personal gain. What else was there to do with such gifts? No longer a frail lab rat with no means of defense, Peter made his first venture into the spotlight by making himself a costume and challenging the infamous Crusher Hogan to a wrestling match.

A match the adolescent Spider won, earning him attention and the ability to take his alias to a bigger stage altogether. This ‘Spider-Man’ quickly became the boy’s new persona, going as far as working day and night on a set of web shooters that would supplement his already impressive repertoire of skills. The celebrity status he so desperately pursued was right on his door step, but just as eager as life was to throw something incredible his way, it was just as eager to introduce the teen to a tragedy that would define who he became.

The Power and Responsibility

Parker had decided that Spider-Man was ready for the small screen, and approached a local television station about the idea. Spider-Man, he can do everything a spider can. Shoot a web, scale a wall, what wasn’t to love? It was a promising premise, but fate had a different plan in store for the teenager when he opted to shirk the task of stopping a burglar. He returned home to find that it had become a crime scene; his Uncle Ben being the victim of a fatal gunshot.

His pain hardened into rage, and Peter set off with his costume to seek retribution and revenge. All he found was guilt; as it was then revealed that the man he’d allowed to walk away scot-free was also the man responsible for his uncle’s death. After the criminal was finally apprehended through his efforts, Peter reflected on the price he’d paid for his vanity and selfishness. It had cost him one of the two most important people in his life, and worse yet, it had cost the other important person her husband and one true love. He found himself drowning in a sea of guilt and sorrow, but the life lessons his Uncle had taught him kept him from sinking eternally into that self-made pit.

One lesson in particular summed it all up perfectly. “ With great power there must also come great responsibility. “ It was true, and Peter realized that the alter ego he’d given birth to had to then be used in a manner that that followed those words. It wasn’t a phrase, it was now a creed that he would live by, one that would guide his life from then on. Spider-Man was no longer a wrestler or television personality, but a crime fighter that would do what was right.

Peter Parker, the teenage high school student would then begin his career as a costumed hero. The weight of his uncle’s words and the guilt of his death would be something he’d carry forever.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Having graduated high-school, Parker and his alter ego found themselves in an entirely different world once he enrolled into Empire State University. Life may have been simple in High School, but as a young adult the real trials and tribulations of Peter Parker and Spider-Man would begin. It’s at ESU that Peter strikes some important and long lasting friendships, specifically with Harry Osborn, son of Osborn Industries CEO Norman Osborn, and the daughter of a renowned police officer, Gwen Stacy. Spider-Man himself makes a few allies here and there, although sometimes in inappropriate ways; such as an ill conceived attempt at auditioning for the Fantastic Four by breaking into their headquarters. Despite the initial misunderstanding, the team and spider parted on friendly terms.

Still, with bills stacking up at home and a widowed aunt that wasn’t equipped to handle all of it, Peter realized it was time to find a means of extra income. Enter the Daily Bugle and their grouchy, penny pinching zealot of an editor. A man whose distaste for Peter’s costumed identity is expressed through the headlines of the Bugle. Opting to make money by selling pictures of himself in costume, Peter earns himself a position at the paper as a photojournalist. During this period, the socially awkward college student finds conflict in juggling both his everyday life and his responsibilities as someone capable of making a difference in the world.

Parker’s world is made even more interesting when his Aunt May sets him up with a spitfire of a red head named Mary-Jane Watson, but ultimately, despite a few dates, it is Gwen Stacy that wins Peter’s heart. A relationship that ends in tragedy, all due to Parker’s greatest and deadliest foe, the Green Goblin.

Tragedy at the George Washington Bridge

Norman Osborn, father to Pete’s best friend and a ruthless business man, turns out to be the Green Goblin. A maniacal villain that carries an arsenal of destructive gadgets and boasts enhanced strength derived from an experimental serum, all at the cost of Norman’s sanity. Initially what began as a plot to become the mastermind of the city’s organized crime element turned into a heated hatred for his arch nemesis, Spider-Man. Seeking to strike fiercely at his bitter enemy and having learned his identity, the Goblin abducts Peter’s girlfriend and holds the girl hostage in hopes of luring Peter into a final battle. The end result is devastating to Peter; after watching the Goblin throw his girlfriend off the bridge, Peter makes a quick attempt at preventing her death.

Unfortunately, either due to physical trauma from the fall itself or from Spider-Man’s webline, Gwen dies suddenly before Peter pulls her up completely, and the war between the Spider and the Goblin ends with the latter impaling himself upon his own glider. Though it is not the last time Parker faces an Osborn Goblin( or even Norman himself ), it does signal the end of an era in the youth’s life.

Wedding Bells and the Civil War

Time rolls on even after the death of Gwen Stacy, one that Mary-Jane Watson helps him through. The pair enter a romantic relationship of their own, though one that proves to be heavily conflicted and short-lived at first before they finally commit to one another and enter into a marriage with the knowledge of the troubles that will lay ahead. One of those troubles going by the name of Felicia Hardy, an old flame from Spider-Man’s past that at times appears to compete for the arachnid’s affections. For the most part though, MJ and Peter enjoy a loving marriage, a bumpy one, but loving all the same. Welcoming Peter’s beloved aunt may into their home as well, the trio find a happy home even off of Peter’s modest income as a teacher at his old High School, Midtown High.

It isn’t until the Superhuman Registration Act that their lives take a sudden turn. Initially in support of the act, and at behest of his mentor Tony Stark, Peter reveals himself on national TV as Spider-Man. A choice that causes a lethal chain reaction ending with a sniper’s bullet intended for Peter Parker, striking his Aunt May in the chest and wounding her mortally.

And here we are..

Unable to save aunt may even with the help of the numerous connections Peter has in the superhero community, Peter and MJ strike a bargain with the demon Mephisto. Sacrificing their marriage and love for a reality where Aunt May lives, the pair are torn apart and thrown into an altered reality where their marriage no longer exists. The once happy couple now share a distant and broken relationship following a sordid break-up. In this brand new day, Peter is unemployed, Harry is still alive, but more importantly, no one but Peter knows the true identity of Spider-Man.

A B I L I T I E S
Peter can cling to most surfaces, has superhuman strength (now capable of lifting 20 tons optimally) and is roughly 18 times more agile than a regular human. The combination of his acrobatic leaps and web-slinging enables him to travel rapidly from place to place. His spider-sense provides an early warning detection system linked with his superhuman kinesthetics, enabling him the ability to evade most any injury, provided he doesn't cognitively override the autonomic reflexes. After the reality warping events of One More Day, Spider-Man’s organic web shooters have disappeared altogether as though they never existed. Still as bright and crafty as ever, Peter continues to employ a set of web shooters that he modifies and improved from time to time. It’s only design flaw still being the need to replenish web cartridges over long periods of time.
